Evidence supporting the use of: Protein (vegetable)
For the body system: Hair
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Vegetable protein is supported by scientific evidence for its role in supporting hair health, primarily due to its fundamental importance in the structure and growth of hair. Hair is composed predominantly of keratin, a type of protein. Dietary protein provides essential amino acids necessary for keratin synthesis. While most studies focus on overall protein intake rather than specifically vegetable-derived protein, plant-based proteins like soy, pea, and lentil have been shown to supply sufficient amino acids when consumed as part of a balanced diet. Research has indicated that protein deficiency, regardless of the source, can lead to hair thinning and loss (telogen effluvium). Some studies suggest that plant proteins may have additional benefits due to their content of phytonutrients and lower levels of saturated fat. However, evidence directly linking vegetable protein supplementation to improved hair growth or thickness is moderate, as most clinical trials do not isolate protein source as the only variable. Nonetheless, nutritionists and dermatologists agree that adequate dietary protein, including from vegetable sources, is important for maintaining normal hair structure and minimizing hair loss in individuals who are not already meeting their protein needs. There is no strong evidence that excess vegetable protein intake confers additional benefit for hair, but ensuring sufficient intake is validated by current scientific understanding of hair biology.
