Evidence supporting the use of: Seaweed (unspecified)
For the body system: Hair
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Seaweed, particularly varieties such as kelp, nori, and wakame, is increasingly used in hair health supplements and products, primarily due to its rich content of minerals (notably iodine, zinc, and iron), vitamins, and bioactive compounds. Scientific evidence supporting the use of seaweed for hair health is limited but emerging. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts from certain seaweeds can promote hair follicle proliferation and support hair growth, likely due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. For example, fucoidan, a sulfated polysaccharide found in brown seaweeds, has demonstrated potential to stimulate dermal papilla cells, which are crucial for hair growth. Additionally, seaweed’s content of essential nutrients may help address deficiencies that contribute to hair loss, such as iron and zinc. However, robust human clinical trials specifically linking seaweed supplementation or topical application to improved hair health or growth are lacking. Much of the support for its use comes from its nutritional profile and early-stage laboratory research, rather than large-scale, high-quality human studies. Overall, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence, the strength of the scientific validation remains moderate at best.
