Evidence supporting the use of: Sesame Seed
For the body system: Hair
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sesame seeds (Sesamum indicum) have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where they are regarded as beneficial for hair health. Traditionally, sesame oil has been used topically to nourish the scalp, promote hair growth, prevent premature graying, and strengthen hair. Its use is often attributed to its rich content of nutrients such as vitamin E, B vitamins, magnesium, calcium, and fatty acids, which are considered important for healthy hair in traditional perspectives.
However, scientific evidence directly supporting the use of sesame seed or sesame oil for hair health is limited. Some laboratory studies have explored the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of sesame seed oil, which may indirectly benefit scalp and hair health by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. There are also studies noting the presence of lignans (such as sesamin and sesamolin) and healthy fats, which could theoretically support skin and hair structure. Nonetheless, most of the claims regarding hair growth, prevention of hair loss, or reversal of gray hair are not substantiated by rigorous clinical trials.
In summary, the use of sesame seed for supporting the hair body system is primarily justified by tradition, with limited direct scientific validation. While its nutritional content and antioxidant properties may offer some supportive effects, high-quality clinical research is lacking to confirm these benefits specifically for hair.
