Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Argan nut oil, derived from the kernels of the Argan tree (Argania spinosa), has a longstanding reputation for promoting hair health, which is supported both by traditional use and emerging scientific research. Its composition is rich in essential fatty acids (such as oleic and linoleic acid), vitamin E (tocopherols), and various antioxidants. These components are believed to help moisturize hair, reduce breakage, and improve shine.

Scientific studies have evaluated the effects of Argan oil on hair. For instance, a study published in 2013 in the Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications reported that topical application of Argan oil improved hair elasticity and prevented protein loss in hair damaged by chemical treatments. Other laboratory studies suggest that its antioxidant properties may protect hair from oxidative stress caused by environmental factors.

Despite these findings, most research is either small-scale or conducted in vitro (outside the human body), and clinical trials on humans remain limited. Therefore, while there is plausible biochemical and some experimental evidence supporting Argan oil's benefits for hair care, high-quality human studies are needed to confirm its efficacy. Its widespread use in cosmetic products is supported by both traditional practice and preliminary scientific findings, justifying a moderate evidence rating.
