Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
The Argan tree (Argania spinosa) produces argan oil, which has a long history of traditional use in Morocco for skin and hair care. In recent years, argan oil has become popular globally as a hair care ingredient, promoted for its moisturizing, smoothing, and protective properties. Scientifically, argan oil is rich in fatty acids (primarily oleic and linoleic acids), vitamin E (tocopherols), and polyphenols, all of which are known to benefit hair health. Several laboratory studies have demonstrated that argan oil can help improve hair elasticity, reduce breakage, and provide a protective barrier against environmental damage due to its antioxidant properties.
Clinical studies specifically investigating argan oil for hair care are limited, but some small-scale trials and in vitro studies support its use for improving hair softness and shine, as well as reducing frizz. Additionally, its high vitamin E content may help reduce oxidative stress on the scalp and hair, potentially supporting hair growth and reducing hair loss. While the evidence is not yet robust or large-scale, it does provide a scientific basis for the traditional uses of argan oil in hair care, justifying its inclusion in many shampoos, conditioners, and leave-in treatments.
