For the health condition: Hair Care (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Portulaca, commonly known as purslane, has been traditionally used in various cultures for its purported health benefits, including in hair care. In traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), portulaca is believed to have cooling, anti-inflammatory, and nourishing properties, which have led to its incorporation into topical formulations for scalp health and hair growth. However, while there are some contemporary cosmetic products that include portulaca extract for its antioxidant and moisturizing effects, the scientific research directly linking portulaca to hair growth or improved hair health is limited. Most of the support for its use in hair care comes from traditional practices and anecdotal reports, rather than from rigorous clinical trials. Some in vitro studies suggest that portulaca contains bioactive compounds like omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants that could theoretically benefit scalp health. Still, direct evidence demonstrating its efficacy for hair growth, prevention of hair loss, or other specific hair care outcomes in humans is lacking. Therefore, its use in hair care is primarily justified by traditional usage rather than robust scientific validation.
