Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Apricot (Prunus armeniaca) and its oil have been used traditionally in some cultures for hair care, including the management of hair loss and thinning. Folk remedies often recommend apricot kernel oil for scalp massage, claiming it nourishes hair follicles, strengthens hair, and promotes growth. The rationale is usually based on its content of fatty acids (like oleic and linoleic acid), vitamin E, and antioxidants, which are believed to improve scalp health and hair texture. However, scientific studies directly investigating the effects of apricot or apricot oil on hair loss or thinning are extremely limited. Most of the support for apricot’s use in hair care comes from anecdotal reports and general traditional practices, rather than robust clinical trials or scientific research. Some laboratory studies suggest that components found in apricot oil can have moisturizing and anti-inflammatory effects, which might benefit scalp health in a general sense. Nonetheless, there is currently insufficient direct scientific evidence to confirm apricot’s effectiveness in preventing or treating hair loss. In summary, while the use of apricot for hair loss has a basis in traditional practices, scientific validation is minimal, and the evidence supporting its use remains weak.
