Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Beef liver is often promoted as a nutrient-dense food that can support hair health due to its high content of essential nutrients such as iron, vitamin A, B vitamins (including biotin), and zinc. Scientific evidence links deficiencies in these nutrients—particularly iron and biotin—to hair loss or thinning in some populations. For example, iron deficiency is a well-established cause of telogen effluvium (a form of diffuse hair shedding), and low biotin levels can contribute to hair thinning, although true biotin deficiency is rare. Beef liver is one of the richest dietary sources of both iron (mainly heme iron, which is highly bioavailable) and biotin.

Despite these associations, there is a lack of direct clinical trials specifically investigating beef liver supplementation for the treatment or prevention of hair loss. Most evidence is extrapolated from studies showing that correcting specific nutrient deficiencies can improve hair growth in affected individuals. Thus, beef liver may help prevent or address hair loss in people with underlying nutritional deficiencies, but evidence does not support its use as a general treatment for hair loss in the absence of such deficiencies. Overconsumption of beef liver can also lead to vitamin A toxicity. Therefore, while the rationale is scientifically grounded in nutrient biology, the evidence specific to beef liver and hair loss is indirect and limited, meriting a low-to-moderate evidence rating.
