Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Fatty acid or fat/oil supplements, particularly those containing omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, have been studied for their potential role in supporting hair health and addressing hair loss or thinning. Scientific interest in these supplements stems from the understanding that essential fatty acids are important components of cell membranes and play a role in skin and hair health. Several clinical studies have evaluated the effects of supplements containing fish oil (rich in omega-3), borage oil or evening primrose oil (sources of omega-6 GLA), and other blends in people with hair thinning, especially in cases such as female pattern hair loss or telogen effluvium.

Some small randomized controlled trials and observational studies suggest that supplementation with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids may reduce hair loss, improve hair density, and increase hair diameter. For example, a 2015 randomized controlled trial published in Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that women taking a supplement containing omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids along with antioxidants experienced improved hair growth and hair density after six months compared to placebo. The hypothesized mechanisms include anti-inflammatory effects and improved blood flow to hair follicles. However, the overall quality of evidence is moderate to low, with small sample sizes and varying supplement compositions. Thus, while there is some scientific support, it is not robust or universally accepted, and more high-quality research is needed to confirm efficacy.
