Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bovine gelatin has traditionally been used in various cultures as a home remedy to support hair health, largely because it is a rich source of collagen and certain amino acids, such as glycine and proline, which are components of hair and skin. Historically, it was believed that consuming gelatin could help strengthen hair and nails, based on the idea that "like supports like." However, scientific evidence supporting these claims is very limited. Most of the available data are anecdotal or based on small, poorly controlled studies. Some research suggests that collagen peptides (which are related to gelatin) may improve skin elasticity and hydration, but direct evidence for hair growth or prevention of hair loss is lacking. The body breaks down gelatin into amino acids during digestion, and there is no clear evidence that these amino acids specifically stimulate hair follicle activity or increase hair growth rates when consumed orally. Overall, while the traditional use of bovine gelatin for hair health is common, especially in supplements marketed for beauty, current scientific research does not robustly validate these uses, and the evidence quality is low.
