Evidence supporting the use of: Cistanche tubulosa
For the health condition: Hair (loss or thinning)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cistanche tubulosa is primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and other traditional systems for supporting hair health, most notably as a remedy for hair loss or thinning. In traditional usage, Cistanche is considered a tonic for the kidney and liver, organs which TCM principles associate with hair vitality. The historical texts and materia medica often mention Cistanche as an ingredient in herbal formulas intended to "nourish the blood" and "strengthen essence," both of which are believed in TCM theory to prevent hair loss and promote hair growth. However, while there is a robust tradition of its use for this purpose, the scientific evidence supporting Cistanche tubulosa for treating hair loss or thinning is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Cistanche may have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and may promote hair follicle proliferation, but these findings are preliminary and not directly translatable to clinical efficacy in humans. There are currently no high-quality clinical trials substantiating its effectiveness for hair growth or hair loss prevention. Thus, the use of Cistanche tubulosa for hair conditions is justified mainly by tradition, and the overall quality of evidence supporting its efficacy for this specific application remains low.
