Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cluster Fig (Ficus racemosa), also known as Gular or Udumbara, has a long-standing presence in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Siddha. In these traditions, various parts of the plant—including the fruit, bark, and leaves—are utilized for their purported health benefits, including applications for skin conditions and general wellness. There are anecdotal and textual references in classical Ayurvedic literature suggesting its use to promote hair health or to combat hair issues, often as part of multi-herb formulations. However, such references are generally not specific, and direct mentions of Cluster Fig being used for hair loss or hair thinning are rare and not well-documented.

Scientifically, there is currently little to no direct research or clinical evidence supporting the use of Cluster Fig for treating hair loss or promoting hair growth. Most modern studies on Ficus racemosa focus on its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties, which, in theory, could be beneficial for scalp health if hair loss is due to underlying scalp conditions. Nevertheless, these links remain speculative. As such, its use for hair loss is primarily justified by tradition, with minimal scientific validation.
