Evidence supporting the use of: DL-Methionine
For the health condition: Hair (loss or thinning)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
DL-Methionine is an essential amino acid and a precursor to other important sulfur-containing compounds, such as cysteine and taurine. Methionine plays a critical role in the synthesis of keratin, a key structural protein in hair. Some scientific rationale exists for its inclusion in hair support supplements, as hair is composed largely of keratin and adequate methionine intake may theoretically support hair health. However, clinical evidence specifically evaluating DL-methionine supplementation for the treatment or prevention of hair loss or thinning in humans is limited.
Most available data are extrapolated from methionine’s biological role in protein synthesis and sulfur metabolism. A handful of small studies and anecdotal reports have suggested that methionine, together with other amino acids like cysteine, could improve hair quality in people with deficiencies or under specific conditions (e.g., chemotherapy-induced hair loss or malnutrition). However, robust, placebo-controlled trials in healthy individuals or those with androgenetic alopecia are lacking. The use of DL-methionine for hair loss is therefore supported by basic science and some mechanistic plausibility, but not by high-quality clinical evidence. Its use is more often justified in formulas for general hair health rather than as a proven treatment for hair loss or thinning.
In summary, the scientific rationale for DL-methionine in hair health exists, but direct clinical validation is weak, and its efficacy for hair loss remains uncertain.
