Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Eugenol, a natural compound primarily found in clove oil, has a long history of traditional use in various natural remedies for hair and scalp health, particularly in Ayurveda and other traditional medicine systems. Traditionally, eugenol-rich clove oil has been applied topically to the scalp to promote hair growth, reduce hair loss, and address scalp conditions due to its purported antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. However, scientific evidence for eugenol’s efficacy in treating hair loss or thinning is limited and primarily based on in vitro studies or animal models. Some laboratory research suggests that eugenol can stimulate dermal papilla cells and exhibit antioxidant effects, which could theoretically benefit hair follicles. Despite these findings, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Most support for eugenol’s use in hair care remains rooted in traditional practices rather than strong scientific validation. As a result, while it continues to be present in some hair care formulations and home remedies, its use is best described as tradition-based with limited preliminary scientific backing.
