Evidence supporting the use of: Fish protein
For the health condition: Hair (loss or thinning)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Fish protein, particularly in the form of fish-derived collagen peptides and marine protein supplements, has been investigated for its potential benefits for hair health, including the treatment of hair loss and thinning. The scientific rationale centers on the rich content of amino acids essential for keratin production (the main protein in hair), as well as nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and antioxidants commonly found in fish. Several clinical studies, including randomized controlled trials, have demonstrated that oral supplementation with marine protein complexes (often including fish proteins, shark cartilage, and mollusk extracts) can improve hair density, thickness, and growth rates in individuals experiencing hair thinning, particularly in cases of telogen effluvium and female pattern hair loss.
A notable example is the use of a marine complex in the popular supplement Viviscal™, which has been studied in multiple peer-reviewed trials. Results suggest statistically significant improvements in hair count and thickness after several months of use compared to placebo. Mechanistically, fish protein may support hair follicle health by supplying bioavailable amino acids and promoting dermal papilla cell proliferation.
However, while initial data are promising, the overall quality of evidence is moderate, with relatively small sample sizes and variability in supplement formulations. Larger, independent studies are needed to confirm efficacy and clarify mechanisms. Nonetheless, current scientific literature provides a reasonable basis for the use of fish protein as a supportive measure for hair loss and thinning.
