Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Gelatin has historically been used as a supplement to support hair health, largely based on the idea that its rich content of proteins, particularly collagen, could help strengthen hair and reduce thinning or loss. This traditional use dates back decades, with gelatin often recommended in beauty and wellness circles for improving the appearance of hair, skin, and nails. However, scientific evidence supporting gelatin’s effectiveness for hair loss or thinning is very limited. Most available studies focus on collagen or gelatin’s general protein content, not on direct hair regrowth or loss prevention. While dietary protein is important for healthy hair growth, there is little direct clinical research showing that gelatin supplementation specifically improves hair loss or thinning. The rationale is that gelatin provides amino acids (like glycine and proline) that are also found in hair keratin, but this does not necessarily translate to a therapeutic effect when consumed orally. Overall, while gelatin use for hair is grounded in tradition and anecdotal reports, rigorous scientific validation is lacking, and it should not be considered a proven treatment for hair loss or thinning.
