Evidence supporting the use of: Ginseng, Panax
For the health condition: Hair (loss or thinning)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Panax ginseng has a long history of traditional use in East Asian medicine for promoting overall vitality, including hair health. In traditional Chinese and Korean medicine, ginseng is believed to invigorate "qi," improve circulation, and strengthen the body, which is thought to support hair growth and reduce hair loss. However, modern scientific validation is limited. Some small-scale laboratory and animal studies suggest that ginsenosides (active compounds in ginseng) may promote hair follicle proliferation and delay apoptosis (cell death) in hair cells, potentially supporting hair growth. For example, a few in vitro studies have shown increased dermal papilla cell proliferation and enhanced hair shaft elongation with ginsenoside treatment. A handful of small human trials and case reports suggest possible benefits, but these are preliminary and not robust enough to confirm efficacy. Large, well-designed clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, while ginseng’s use for hair loss is rooted in tradition and supported by some early experimental data, the overall quality and quantity of scientific evidence are still low. Most claims remain based on traditional beliefs and limited animal or cell studies rather than strong clinical validation.
