Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Kelp, a type of seaweed, has traditionally been used in some cultures as a supplement to support hair health and address hair loss or thinning. The rationale behind its use stems largely from its high iodine content, which is essential for proper thyroid function. The thyroid gland plays a significant role in regulating metabolism, and thyroid imbalances (especially hypothyroidism) can lead to hair thinning or loss. Thus, kelp supplementation has been traditionally used as a natural remedy to support thyroid health and, by extension, hair growth. However, direct scientific evidence linking kelp supplementation to improved hair growth or prevention of hair loss in individuals without thyroid dysfunction is lacking. Most of the support is anecdotal or based on the general nutritional benefits of kelp (such as minerals and vitamins). Clinical studies specifically investigating kelp’s efficacy for hair loss are not available. Therefore, while there is a traditional basis for its use, particularly in the context of thyroid-related hair loss, scientific validation is minimal, and the overall evidence is weak.
