Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Methionine is an essential amino acid involved in numerous metabolic processes, including the synthesis of proteins and other amino acids such as cysteine, which is a key component of keratin—the main structural protein in hair. Because of this biochemical role, methionine is sometimes included in dietary supplements marketed for hair growth or the reduction of hair loss. Scientifically, there is a plausible rationale for its inclusion, as sulfur-containing amino acids (methionine and cysteine) are important for hair structure. However, direct clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of methionine supplementation for preventing or reversing hair loss in humans is limited. Most available studies have focused on animal models, in vitro data, or have examined methionine as one ingredient among many in combination supplements, making it difficult to isolate its specific effects. As of 2024, there are no large, well-controlled human trials that clearly demonstrate a significant benefit of methionine supplementation for hair loss or thinning in otherwise healthy individuals. Thus, while there is a scientific basis for its use and it is commonly found in "hair support" products, the strength of direct clinical evidence remains modest.
