Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Onion has been used in traditional remedies for hair loss and thinning, particularly in Ayurvedic and folk medicine practices. The use of onion juice topically on the scalp is based on the belief that its high sulfur content nourishes hair follicles, improves blood circulation, and thereby encourages hair regrowth and reduces shedding. Onion is also thought to possess antimicrobial properties, which may help combat scalp infections that can contribute to hair loss.

Scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of onion for hair loss is limited but not entirely absent. A small, randomized controlled trial published in 2002 in the Journal of Dermatology evaluated the effects of onion juice in people with patchy alopecia areata. The study found that 74% of participants who applied onion juice experienced some hair regrowth after four weeks, compared to 13% in the control group. However, this study was small and focused on a specific type of hair loss. There is currently insufficient large-scale, high-quality research to fully validate onion's effectiveness for general hair loss or thinning.

In summary, the use of onion for treating hair loss is primarily justified by traditional practice, with some preliminary scientific support, but overall evidence remains weak and further research is needed.
