Evidence supporting the use of: Polygonum
For the health condition: Hair (loss or thinning)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Polygonum, particularly Polygonum multiflorum (commonly known as He Shou Wu or Fo-Ti), has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for supporting hair growth and addressing hair loss or premature graying. TCM texts and folklore suggest that preparations of He Shou Wu can nourish the liver and kidney, replenish vital essence, and thereby benefit hair health. Several classical herbal formulas include Polygonum as a central ingredient for hair-related concerns, and anecdotal evidence from centuries of use supports its traditional reputation as an anti-aging and hair-restorative herb.
However, scientific evidence supporting these traditional claims remains limited. A few in vitro and animal studies have explored the potential mechanisms, such as promoting hair follicle proliferation and reducing oxidative stress, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Some studies also raise concerns about potential hepatotoxicity with long-term or high-dose use of Polygonum multiflorum. Thus, while the traditional use is well-documented, the evidence from modern scientific research is preliminary and inconsistent, justifying a low to moderate evidence rating.
