Evidence supporting the use of: Protein (unspecified)
For the health condition: Hair (loss or thinning)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Protein is an essential macronutrient required for the growth and maintenance of all body tissues, including hair. Hair is primarily composed of keratin, a fibrous structural protein. Scientific evidence indicates that adequate protein intake is necessary for the normal hair growth cycle, and protein deficiency can lead to hair loss or thinning (telogen effluvium). Clinical observations and small studies have shown that individuals who are malnourished, particularly with insufficient protein consumption (as seen in conditions like kwashiorkor), can develop noticeable hair thinning or loss. However, in individuals with adequate dietary protein, supplementation with additional protein has not been shown to significantly enhance hair growth or prevent hair loss. The use of unspecified protein supplements for hair loss is therefore scientifically justified in cases of protein deficiency, but there is limited evidence for benefit in people with adequate diets. Most research supports the general importance of protein for hair health, but does not endorse high-protein supplementation as a specific treatment for hair loss unless a deficiency is identified. As such, the evidence supporting protein supplementation for hair loss is moderate and mostly applies to those with inadequate protein intake, rather than the general population.
