Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Red Sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza), also known as Danshen, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for improving blood circulation and treating various ailments, including those related to hair loss or thinning. In TCM, hair loss is often attributed to poor blood flow to the scalp or imbalances in the body's systems. Red Sage is believed to invigorate blood, dispel blood stasis, and thereby theoretically promote hair health and growth. However, there is very limited direct scientific evidence supporting Red Sage’s efficacy specifically for treating hair loss or thinning. Most modern research on Red Sage focuses on its cardiovascular, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. While these effects could hypothetically benefit scalp health, no robust clinical trials or peer-reviewed studies have confirmed its effectiveness for hair regrowth or the prevention of hair thinning in humans. Thus, its use for this purpose is primarily based on traditional practice rather than scientific validation.
