Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 2

Selenomethionine is an organic form of selenium, an essential trace mineral involved in several biological processes, including antioxidant defense and thyroid hormone metabolism. Selenium, via its incorporation into selenoproteins, plays a role in protecting cells from oxidative stress, which is thought to be a contributing factor in some cases of hair loss. While selenium deficiency is associated with changes in hair, including hair loss, such cases are rare in developed countries and usually occur in the context of severe malnutrition or specific disease states. There is some scientific rationale for selenium supplementation to support hair health in individuals with a diagnosed deficiency. However, for individuals with normal selenium status, supplementation has not been robustly shown to prevent or treat hair thinning or loss. Most clinical studies focus on selenium's role in general health rather than specifically on hair growth. Excess selenium intake can actually cause hair loss (selenosis) among other adverse effects. Selenomethionine is sometimes included in hair support supplements due to its high bioavailability and safety profile at appropriate doses, but the direct evidence for its efficacy in treating common patterns of hair loss (such as androgenetic alopecia or telogen effluvium) is limited. Therefore, while there is a scientific basis for its use in cases of deficiency, the overall evidence supporting its use for hair loss in the general population is weak.
