Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient involved in DNA synthesis, red blood cell formation, and neurological function. Its use in supporting hair health, specifically for hair loss or thinning, is based on its critical role in cell division and growth – both necessary for healthy hair follicles. Scientific evidence directly linking B12 supplementation to improved hair growth or prevention of hair loss in the general population is limited. However, there is clinical support for B12 supplementation in cases where deficiency is identified.

Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to a variety of symptoms, including anemia, fatigue, and sometimes hair changes such as hair thinning or loss. Correction of the deficiency typically resolves these symptoms, including any associated hair loss. Several case reports and observational studies note improvement in hair condition with normalization of B12 levels. However, in individuals with normal B12 status, there is little evidence that additional supplementation will improve hair growth or prevent hair loss.

Overall, B12 is sometimes included in hair supplements, but robust clinical trials demonstrating benefit for hair loss in non-deficient individuals are lacking. Therefore, scientific support for its use is strongest in the context of deficiency, and weak for routine use in otherwise healthy individuals for hair health.
