Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Biotin (Vitamin B7) is commonly marketed and used as a supplement to support hair growth and to treat hair loss or thinning. This use is rooted primarily in tradition and anecdotal reports rather than robust scientific validation. Biotin deficiency is known to cause hair thinning and loss, but such deficiencies are rare in the general population. Most people obtain sufficient biotin from their diets, and there is little evidence that supplementation benefits individuals with normal biotin levels. Clinical studies investigating biotin supplementation for hair loss in people without a deficiency are limited, poorly designed, or lack control groups. Some case reports and small studies have shown improvement in hair growth after biotin supplementation, but these often involve individuals with underlying conditions that impair biotin metabolism or absorption. Major dermatology and scientific organizations generally agree that, outside of deficiency, there is insufficient evidence to support the use of biotin supplements for hair loss. Therefore, the continued use of biotin for this purpose is driven more by tradition and marketing than by strong scientific data.
