Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin D has a plausible biological role in hair health, as vitamin D receptors are present in hair follicles and play a part in the hair growth cycle. Deficiency in vitamin D has been associated with certain types of hair loss, particularly alopecia areata and telogen effluvium, in both observational and some case-control studies. For example, several studies have found that serum vitamin D levels tend to be lower in individuals with various forms of hair loss compared to healthy controls. However, evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on whether supplementation with vitamin D improves hair growth or prevents hair loss in those with normal levels is limited and inconclusive. Most positive results have been seen in individuals who are deficient in vitamin D, suggesting that correction of deficiency may help in such cases, but not necessarily in those with adequate levels. There is no strong evidence to support the use of vitamin D supplementation for hair loss prevention or treatment in the general population without deficiency. Therefore, while the scientific rationale exists and some studies show an association, the overall strength of evidence is considered weak to moderate, mostly limited to observational data, and large RCTs are lacking.
