Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Vitamin E, including its beta and delta tocopherol forms, has traditionally been used in various cultures as a remedy to support hair health and address issues such as hair loss or thinning. This use is largely based on the general belief that Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant, protecting cells (including those in hair follicles) from oxidative stress, which is sometimes associated with hair loss. However, the bulk of the traditional and popular usage focuses on Vitamin E as a whole rather than specifically on beta and delta tocopherols; alpha-tocopherol is the most studied form.

Scientifically, there is limited and low-quality evidence to support the use of Vitamin E, or specifically beta and delta tocopherols, for hair loss or thinning. A small number of studies and anecdotal reports suggest a possible benefit, but these are generally underpowered, lack rigorous controls, or do not isolate the effects of beta and delta tocopherols. Most clinical research, if any, focuses on alpha-tocopherol or mixed tocopherols, and results are inconclusive. The American Academy of Dermatology and other expert bodies do not recommend Vitamin E supplementation as a primary treatment for hair loss. Thus, while the use of Vitamin E for hair health is rooted in tradition, robust scientific validation is lacking.
