Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Vitamin E has been traditionally used and promoted as a remedy for hair loss or thinning, largely due to its antioxidant properties and role in skin health. The most common form present in supplements is alpha-tocopherol, but gamma-tocopherol is also found in some formulations. Historically, vitamin E has been believed to improve scalp circulation, reduce oxidative stress, and thereby support hair growth. However, scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited and of low quality. A few small studies and anecdotal reports suggest some benefit, but there is a lack of robust, well-controlled clinical trials demonstrating that oral or topical vitamin E, including gamma-tocopherol, effectively treats or prevents hair loss in the general population. Most dermatological guidelines do not recommend vitamin E for hair loss due to insufficient evidence. In summary, while vitamin E continues to be marketed and used traditionally for hair health, its efficacy is not well supported by current scientific research.
