Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Wheatgrass has been traditionally promoted in some wellness and natural health circles as a remedy for hair loss or thinning, primarily because of its high content of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, particularly chlorophyll. Proponents claim that these nutrients can improve scalp health, stimulate hair follicles, and ultimately reduce hair loss or support regrowth. However, these beliefs are not rooted in long-standing cultural traditions or ancient medicine systems, but rather in more recent health food trends and anecdotal reports from the 20th and 21st centuries. There is little direct historical evidence that wheatgrass was specifically used for hair health in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda or Traditional Chinese Medicine. Scientific validation is also lacking—there are currently no robust clinical studies or peer-reviewed research demonstrating that wheatgrass supplementation or topical application has any significant effect on hair loss or hair thinning in humans. Most supporting claims are extrapolated from general nutritional benefits, rather than direct evidence. As a result, the justification for using wheatgrass for hair loss rests primarily on modern traditional or anecdotal use, with very weak supporting evidence.
