For the health condition: Halitosis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Patrinia, a genus of plants commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for various ailments, primarily related to heat and toxicity in the body, abscesses, and inflammation. Its use in the context of halitosis (bad breath) is rooted mainly in traditional practices rather than scientific validation. In TCM, halitosis is sometimes attributed to internal heat, dampness, or digestive disturbances, and Patrinia species (such as Patrinia scabiosaefolia) are believed to clear heat and promote detoxification, which, by traditional logic, could help address the underlying causes of bad breath.
However, clinical or experimental scientific studies directly investigating Patrinia's efficacy for halitosis are lacking. There is minimal modern research on its antibacterial properties, but these have not been specifically linked to oral health or the bacteria responsible for halitosis. Therefore, the use of Patrinia for halitosis is primarily justified by traditional practice, with little to no scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for this specific condition.
