Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Borassus palm (Borassus flabellifer), commonly known as the palmyra palm, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems in South and Southeast Asia. Its fruit, sap, and various extracts have been used for a range of ailments, including to alleviate symptoms associated with hangovers. In ethnobotanical records, traditional practitioners have sometimes recommended consuming the fruit pulp or sap as a cooling agent and for general detoxification, which may be perceived as beneficial after alcohol consumption. However, there is a lack of rigorous scientific studies specifically evaluating the efficacy of Borassus palm in treating or preventing hangover symptoms. The traditional rationale is often based on its hydrating properties, as the sap is rich in electrolytes and sugars, which could theoretically help with rehydration and mild nutrient replenishment after alcohol-induced dehydration. Despite this, no clinical trials or pharmacological studies provide direct evidence of its effectiveness against hangover-related symptoms. Therefore, while there is some traditional use for this purpose, the evidence supporting its effectiveness is weak and largely anecdotal.
