Evidence supporting the use of: Horsemint
For the health condition: Hangover
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Horsemint (Mentha longifolia and related Monarda species) has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine across various cultures. In some folk medicine systems, horsemint has been used as a remedy for digestive ailments, headaches, and to promote sweating, which are symptoms sometimes associated with hangovers. The rationale stems from its aromatic and carminative properties, believed to soothe the stomach and support mild detoxification. However, there is little documentation of horsemint being specifically and consistently used for hangover treatment in historical records, and references to its use for hangovers are sparse and anecdotal. Scientific studies directly investigating horsemint’s effectiveness for hangovers or alcohol-induced symptoms are lacking. While some of its components (such as menthol and thymol) have known physiological effects, no clinical or pharmacological evidence currently supports its use to alleviate hangover symptoms. Therefore, horsemint’s use for hangovers is primarily rooted in tradition rather than scientific validation, and the strength of evidence is weak.
