Evidence supporting the use of: Sete sangrias
For the health condition: Hangover
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Sete sangrias (commonly referring to a blend of seven medicinal plants, often including Polygonum punctatum, Scoparia dulcis, and others) is primarily used in Brazilian and other South American folk medicine. Its name translates as "seven bleeding" or "seven purges," and it is traditionally employed for a wide variety of ailments, particularly to "cleanse the blood," treat hypertension, and as a general detoxifying agent. The use of sete sangrias for hangover relief is rooted in these traditional beliefs that it can purify the body after excess consumption of alcohol or rich foods. However, there is minimal direct historical documentation specifically linking sete sangrias to hangover treatment; rather, its use in this context is an extension of its general detoxifying reputation in folk medicine.
From a scientific standpoint, there is no robust evidence supporting the efficacy of sete sangrias or its component plants for hangover treatment. No controlled clinical studies have examined its effect on hangover symptoms, and pharmacological research on the individual plants is limited and does not directly relate to alcohol metabolism or the alleviation of hangover symptoms. Thus, the justification for its use in hangover is mainly traditional and anecdotal, with little to no scientific validation at present.
