Thyroid hormone replacement is a scientifically validated treatment for Hashimoto's Disease (Hashimoto's thyroiditis), which is an autoimmune condition that often leads to hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). In Hashimoto's Disease, the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, resulting in reduced thyroid hormone production. The most common and effective treatment is the administration of exogenous thyroid hormone, typically in the form of levothyroxine (synthetic T4), to restore normal hormone levels and alleviate symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, and depression.

Numerous clinical guidelines, including those from the American Thyroid Association and the Endocrine Society, recommend thyroid hormone replacement for individuals with Hashimoto's Disease who have developed hypothyroidism. The efficacy and safety of levothyroxine have been confirmed in multiple randomized controlled trials and decades of clinical use. While some patients and practitioners use desiccated thyroid extract ("natural thyroid"), the standard of care remains synthetic levothyroxine due to its consistency and reliable dosing.

Thyroid hormone supplementation is not intended to treat the autoimmune process itself, but rather to correct the hormone deficiency that results from thyroid gland destruction. There is robust evidence for its effectiveness in improving symptoms and restoring normal metabolic function in patients with overt hypothyroidism secondary to Hashimoto's Disease.
