Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin D supplementation for Hashimoto's Disease has a basis in scientific investigation, although the evidence is not robust and is still emerging. Several observational studies have shown that individuals with Hashimoto's thyroiditis often have lower serum vitamin D levels compared to healthy controls. Furthermore, some interventional studies suggest that vitamin D supplementation may help reduce thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) levels, a marker of thyroid autoimmunity, although not all studies are consistent in these findings. The hypothesized mechanism involves vitamin D's immunomodulatory effects, as it can influence T-cell function and the balance of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, which may be relevant to the autoimmune process in Hashimoto's Disease.

However, large randomized controlled trials specifically evaluating clinical outcomes (such as thyroid function improvement or symptom relief) with vitamin D supplementation in people with Hashimoto's are lacking. Most guidelines do not recommend routine vitamin D supplementation solely for thyroid autoimmunity unless there is confirmed deficiency. In summary, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence supporting vitamin D supplementation in Hashimoto's Disease, the strength of evidence is moderate to low, and more high-quality studies are needed to establish clear clinical recommendations.
