Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin D has received scientific attention regarding its role in Hashimoto's disease, an autoimmune thyroid disorder. Several observational studies have reported that individuals with Hashimoto's disease often have lower serum vitamin D levels compared to healthy controls. Additionally, vitamin D is known to play a regulatory role in the immune system, and deficiency has been linked to increased risk of autoimmune diseases. Some small interventional studies suggest that vitamin D supplementation may reduce thyroid autoantibody levels (e.g., anti-TPO antibodies) in patients with Hashimoto's disease, potentially indicating a beneficial immunomodulatory effect.

However, the overall quality of the evidence is limited. Most of the existing studies are small, short-term, and sometimes lack rigorous controls. Larger, randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm whether vitamin D supplementation has a meaningful clinical impact on thyroid function, symptom improvement, or disease progression in Hashimoto’s disease. Current clinical guidelines do not recommend vitamin D supplementation specifically for Hashimoto's disease unless there is an established deficiency. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence for vitamin D’s use in this context, the evidence is not strong or definitive.
