Achyranthes species, particularly Achyranthes aspera, have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Unani, and folk medicines across Asia and Africa. In these traditions, Achyranthes is employed for a variety of ailments, including headache, where it is typically used as a paste, decoction, or powder applied locally or taken internally. Traditional texts often attribute its effects to anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and soothing properties, although the exact mechanisms are not described in modern scientific terms.

However, despite this longstanding traditional use, scientific validation for Achyranthes in the management of headaches is very limited. There are few, if any, clinical studies specifically examining its efficacy for headache in humans. Some laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties in extracts of Achyranthes, which could provide a rationale for its traditional use, but these findings are mostly preclinical and not headache-specific.
