Evidence supporting the use of: Betony
For the health condition: Headache (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Betony (Stachys officinalis) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine for the treatment of headaches and related neurological complaints. Ancient herbalists, such as Dioscorides and Culpeper, praised betony for its ability to alleviate head pain, with preparations made from its leaves, flowers, or whole plant used as teas, tinctures, or poultices. The herb was commonly included in headache remedies during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and its reputation for this purpose persisted into more recent folk medicine practices.
However, while betony’s use for headaches is well-documented in traditional sources, there is a lack of robust scientific research validating this effect. Only limited modern studies have investigated the pharmacological actions of betony, and these have not specifically addressed its efficacy for headache. Betony contains various phytochemicals, such as tannins, flavonoids, and iridoids, which may possess mild anti-inflammatory or calming properties, but there is currently insufficient clinical evidence to confirm its effectiveness for treating headaches. As such, its reputation for this use is primarily supported by historical and traditional accounts rather than scientific research.
