Black Hellebore (Helleborus niger) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, particularly in ancient Greece and Rome. Historical sources indicate that Black Hellebore was sometimes used for a variety of ailments, including as a remedy for headache. For example, Hippocrates and other ancient physicians employed hellebore as a strong purgative, and its use was associated with the expulsion of "black bile," which was thought to cause headaches and other ailments in humoral medicine. However, these uses were based on humoral theory and pre-modern understandings of disease rather than scientific evidence as understood today.

Modern scientific validation for Black Hellebore's efficacy in treating headaches is lacking. There are no robust clinical studies or pharmacological data supporting its use for this indication, and the plant is known to be toxic, with potential for serious adverse effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, and cardiac disturbances.
