Evidence supporting the use of: Damask rose
For the health condition: Headache (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Damask rose (Rosa damascena) has a long-standing history in traditional medicine systems, especially in Persian, Unani, and Ayurvedic practices, where it is used to alleviate various ailments, including general headaches. The traditional use is mainly based on the belief that the rose’s fragrance and extracts possess cooling, calming, and anti-inflammatory effects, which may help relieve headaches caused by heat or stress. Preparations include rose water, rose oil, and herbal decoctions, which are applied topically to the forehead or temples, inhaled as aromatherapy, or ingested in diluted forms.
Scientific studies directly investigating Damask rose for headache relief are scarce. Some research suggests that Damask rose essential oil has mild analgesic and anxiolytic effects, likely due to its influence on neurotransmitter activity and its potential to induce relaxation. A few small-scale clinical trials and animal studies have reported that inhalation of rose aroma can reduce perceived pain intensity and promote relaxation, but these findings are not specific to headaches and the sample sizes are limited. Overall, while there is modest experimental support for the calming and mild pain-relieving actions of Damask rose, robust scientific validation for its efficacy in treating headaches specifically is lacking. Thus, its use for headache relief is primarily grounded in traditional practice.
