Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Diclofenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is scientifically validated for the treatment of various pain conditions, including headaches. It acts by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, thereby reducing the synthesis of prostaglandins involved in pain and inflammation. Clinical evidence supports the use of diclofenac, particularly in the treatment of migraine headaches. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have demonstrated that oral and intramuscular diclofenac can effectively reduce the severity of acute migraine attacks and provide relief from associated symptoms such as nausea and photophobia. The efficacy of diclofenac is comparable to other NSAIDs, and in some studies, it has shown similar or superior effectiveness to sumatriptan, a standard migraine-specific therapy.

Diclofenac is less commonly used for tension-type headaches, where simple analgesics like acetaminophen or ibuprofen are typically preferred. However, it remains a viable option when other NSAIDs are ineffective or contraindicated. The evidence for diclofenac in general (non-migraine) headache types is less robust, but its proven analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties support its use for headache relief in appropriate clinical contexts. Adverse effects are similar to other NSAIDs and include gastrointestinal, renal, and cardiovascular risks, which should be considered when prescribing. Overall, diclofenac’s use in headache management is supported by substantial scientific evidence, particularly for migraines.
