Evidence supporting the use of: Ginger
For the health condition: Headache (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has been traditionally used for various ailments, including headaches. In recent years, scientific studies have evaluated its efficacy, particularly for migraine headaches. Several randomized controlled trials have indicated that ginger may be effective in reducing the severity and duration of migraine attacks. The proposed mechanisms include ginger’s anti-inflammatory properties, inhibition of prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis, and its ability to block serotonin receptors, all of which are involved in migraine pathophysiology.
A 2014 double-blind randomized controlled trial compared ginger powder (250 mg) with sumatriptan (a common migraine medication) in 100 patients. Results showed that ginger was nearly as effective as sumatriptan in reducing headache severity within two hours, with fewer side effects. Other studies and systematic reviews have supported these findings, though most have focused on migraines rather than general tension-type headaches.
While the evidence base is still limited and more high-quality studies are needed, current research supports the use of ginger as a complementary approach for migraine relief. There is less direct evidence for its use in treating general (non-migraine) headaches, but its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties may have a beneficial effect. Overall, the scientific evidence for ginger in headache management, especially migraines, is moderate (rated 3 out of 5).
