Evidence supporting the use of: Lysimachia
For the health condition: Headache (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Lysimachia, a genus of plants commonly known as loosestrife, has been used in traditional herbal medicine in various regions, including China and parts of Europe. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), certain species such as Lysimachia christinae (commonly called "Jin Qian Cao") are primarily used for conditions like urinary tract disorders, jaundice, and gallstones. However, there are scattered references in traditional herbal texts to the use of Lysimachia species for alleviating headache, often as part of multi-herb formulations rather than as a single remedy. The rationale for its use is generally based on the plant's purported abilities to "clear heat" or "dispel dampness," which are TCM concepts sometimes associated with headache etiology.
Despite these traditional uses, there is little to no modern scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of Lysimachia for headache. Clinical trials are lacking, and pharmacological studies have not specifically investigated its effects on headache pathophysiology. Thus, any support for its use in this context is rooted in tradition rather than in scientific validation. The overall quality and amount of evidence for Lysimachia's use in headache is low, meriting a rating of 1 on the evidence scale.
