Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Arani (usually referring to Premna serratifolia or related species in Ayurveda) is used traditionally in various Ayurvedic formulations, particularly for its purported effects on fevers, inflammation, and respiratory complaints. In the context of headaches, especially those attributed to sinus issues (termed “Shirahshoola” in Ayurveda), Arani is sometimes included as part of polyherbal combinations believed to alleviate symptoms through its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. However, there is very limited direct historical documentation specifically connecting Arani to the management of sinus headaches. Most references to its use for headaches are indirect, relating to its broader roles in treating fever and inflammation, which may secondarily benefit headache symptoms. Scientifically, there is scant evidence directly evaluating Arani’s efficacy for sinus headaches or sinusitis in contemporary clinical research. Some laboratory studies have noted anti-inflammatory activity in extracts of Arani, but these findings are preliminary and not directly linked to headache or sinus relief in humans. Thus, support for Arani's use in sinus headaches is based primarily on traditional usage rather than robust clinical or pharmacological evidence.
