Atractylone is a bioactive compound found in Atractylodes species, especially Atractylodes lancea and Atractylodes macrocephala, which are widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, these herbs are commonly prescribed in formulas for treating symptoms associated with “wind-cold” invasion, dampness, and to support the spleen and stomach. Sinus headaches, often interpreted in TCM as the result of dampness or phlegm obstructing the head and sinuses, are among the conditions for which Atractylodes formulations may be used. The herb is thought to “dry dampness” and improve the flow of qi, thereby alleviating headache and sinus congestion. However, while these traditional uses are well-documented in TCM materia medica, direct scientific studies focusing on atractylone’s specific effects on sinus headaches or sinusitis are lacking. Most available research on atractylone pertains to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory properties in general, not specifically to headache or sinus conditions. Therefore, the use of atractylone for sinus headache is primarily supported by traditional use and theory, with limited scientific validation to date.
