Evidence supporting the use of: Australian Sandalwood
For the health condition: Headache (sinus)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Australian Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) has a long history of traditional use by Indigenous Australians and in some herbal medicine systems, primarily for its aromatic and calming properties. For headaches, including those associated with sinus issues, its use is rooted in traditional practices that employ the oil or wood in topical preparations or inhalations to provide symptomatic relief. The rationale is based on sandalwood’s reputed ability to reduce tension and promote relaxation, which may be beneficial for stress-related headaches. Additionally, the pleasant aroma has been used in steam inhalation, which might subjectively ease sinus discomfort.
However, there is minimal scientific evidence to directly support the efficacy of Australian Sandalwood in treating or alleviating headaches, including sinus-related headaches. Most available data pertain to Indian Sandalwood (Santalum album), and even for that species, high-quality clinical studies are lacking. The evidence that does exist for sandalwood oils mainly concerns their anti-inflammatory, mild analgesic, and anxiolytic effects in laboratory settings or traditional use contexts. In summary, the use of Australian Sandalwood for sinus headaches is primarily supported by traditional use, with little to no robust scientific validation.
