Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Belamcanda chinensis (also known as Leopard Lily or Shegan) is primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Its rhizome has been employed for centuries to "clear heat" and "resolve phlegm," particularly in the upper respiratory tract. In TCM, Belamcanda is indicated for sore throat, cough, and occasionally for sinus-related issues, including headaches attributed to "wind-heat" or phlegm accumulation in the sinuses. The rationale is that by reducing inflammation and clearing mucus, it can indirectly alleviate headaches caused by sinus congestion. However, the evidence is rooted in traditional use and herbal compendia, rather than modern clinical trials.

Scientific research on Belamcanda has focused on its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, and some in vitro and animal studies suggest it may inhibit inflammatory mediators. However, there is no high-quality clinical trial evidence specifically demonstrating efficacy for sinus headache. Therefore, its use for this purpose is justified by traditional practice, with only very limited scientific support. The overall evidence rating remains low, primarily reflecting its historical rather than evidence-based application.
