Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Boswellia serrata, commonly known as Indian frankincense, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, particularly for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. In the context of headache, especially those associated with sinus issues (sinusitis), Boswellia is traditionally used to reduce inflammation of the sinuses, improve breathing, and ease pain. The gum resin contains boswellic acids, which are believed to inhibit pro-inflammatory enzymes. Historical texts and anecdotal reports from Ayurvedic practitioners note its use in conditions characterized by swelling and congestion, including headaches attributed to sinus inflammation.

However, while there is some scientific research into Boswellia’s effects on inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis and inflammatory bowel disease, direct scientific evidence supporting its use specifically for sinus headaches is limited. A few small studies have explored Boswellia’s benefits in chronic inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract, suggesting it may reduce inflammation and symptoms, but these do not specifically address headache as a primary outcome. As such, its use for sinus headache remains primarily rooted in traditional practice, with only limited indirect scientific support.
