Evidence supporting the use of: Citrus nobilis
For the health condition: Headache (sinus)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Citrus nobilis, commonly referred to as mandarin orange or tangerine, has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in East Asia, for various ailments including headache and sinus-related discomfort. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the dried peel of Citrus nobilis (often called "Chen Pi") is valued for its ability to regulate qi and alleviate symptoms related to phlegm and congestion, which are sometimes associated with sinus headaches. Herbal formulas containing Chen Pi might be prescribed by practitioners for conditions involving headaches believed to arise from blocked sinuses or poor qi flow. However, there is little to no direct clinical or pharmacological evidence to specifically substantiate the effectiveness of Citrus nobilis for sinus headaches in modern scientific literature. Most available information centers around its traditional use for general respiratory issues, digestive complaints, and as a flavoring agent. While some studies have investigated the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of citrus peels, these are preliminary and not directly linked to headache or sinus relief. Thus, the support for using Citrus nobilis in this context is primarily traditional, with scientific validation currently lacking.
